Movie Review: The Town

Before it gets drowned by the critically acclaimed The Social Network and the sequel to last year's Paranormal Activity, ummm Paranormal Activity 2, I'd like to write a review for this little known film (well konti lang yata ang nakapanuod nito, di ko napansin sa Facebook wall updates ko) called The Town.

Di ko to pinalagpas because c'mon, how uncommon are these types of movies these days?

Well to think about it, action movies were very common nga pala this year. What with the abundance of movies like Machete, A-Team, The Expendables and stuff. Buuuut, an action movies that's more, you know, serious? Well that's where The Town came in.

In complete uniform and all.
The story's about a group of bank robbers led by MacRay played bye Ben Affleck and his ummm brother(?) Jem played by Jeremy Renner. With them are 2 other guys na hindi ko nadinig/nakalimutan/didn't bother to/don't know their names. The 4 of them live in Charlestown, Boston, The Town as the title suggest since, as the opening credits said, "Most of the bank robbers in Boston live in this area..." or something to that effect.

The crew. Look at the generic-ness of the other 2.
As I've said earlier, this is a more serious and I'd say thinking man's action film, similar to The Departed, Collateral and in most areas, Michael Mann's Heat (which is also AWESOME, I can't emphasize that enough). Let's start with Heat; whereas that film focused on the interactions of the robbers and the cops, The ,Town focused on the interactions of the two leaders of the crew. those 2 being MacRay and Jem who frequently collide with each other's ideas. Then things get complicated with the addition of a love interest, an intelligent cop, The Man in Black, and a few others thrown in the mix.

Like Blake Lively's cleavage and legs. But mostly cleavage. WOAH.
The story's pacing and presentation is really great and the actors are really believable. Jem in particular is really really terrifying. Well aside from the drama parts, there are the action sequences which I think can rival Heat's climactic street shootout. Heat's shootout scared me because of its real-ness but that's like 1 heavy action sequence in that movie, in The Town I counted three. 3 very different sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Like hardcore sa barilan talaga. And one of those will haunt you in your sleep.

Holy sister of WTF. Sweet dreams.
Well, while watching, you'll get to like and maybe root for the bad guys since technically, they're the protagonists, but you'll be torn when the police shows up with an equally awesome leader. Or baka gusto mo lang na mababait ang manalo parati. Either way, it's still epic to watch the movie, particularly the last part of it, unfold.

So what are you waiting for? Before (or maybe after?) you watch other films that are out this month, (or last month?), go ahead and WATCH THIS. Or maybe wait for the DVD's. But it really is worth it, Oscar nominations? Maybe. High probability. I think. Go. Watch it.

and watch Michael Mann's Heat as well. It has Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in their prime.
